I have personally enjoyed writing about several
different subjects and slighting my favorite, chiropractic. Chiropractic means “the practice by hand” in Greek.
Chiropractic was originally discovered in 1895 by a fish peddler and
grocery vendor. The then
future, Dr. Palmer, was concerned about one of his helpers, a kind black
gentleman by the name of Harvard Lillard. This gentleman could not hear and hence could not speak.
Dr. Palmer discovered a large knot on Mr. Lillard’s neck and using
his hand proceeded to palpate the area.
With the acceptance of Dr. Palmer’s palpitation of the very sore
area, and with moderate pressure, Dr. Palmer admitted a whale of a sound
from Mr. Lillard. He made such
a sound because this was the first time in his life he heard and didn’t
understand what these noises were. This was the first chiropractic adjustment.
Dr. Palmer started the Palmer School of Chiropractic in
the early 1900’s in Davenport, Iowa.
He felt this to be the best place for the centers of growth and
acceptance of this new profession…chiropractic.
Davenport, Iowa was chosen because of the Mississippi River only
running there east to west. There
were odd theories at that time of electric currents and ionic functions in
the atmosphere. Now that may
sound strange to you, but take note of our weather the last few years.
Why does it seem that there are good rainstorms from the west and
once it hits the river it has a tendency to disperse and go north and south?
Back to chiropractic… Palmer College has now expanded
to two new universities in the West and the East.
My basic courses started in 1967.
There were 321 students that started in my quarter.
Three of them committed suicide and with the escalation of Vietnam,
only 82 reached graduate status. We
exceed by 400 credit hours more time as compared to other medical college or
universities. The education is 6 years.
The internship is compressed with the classes the last 1-˝ years of
education.
Chiropractic was used as far back as 30 B.C. in the
Eastern world. Western medicine
is approximately 2000 years old. Chiropractic
has been found to be approximately 1/9 of the cost for treatment of similar
symptoms medically. Not all
cases are chiropractic cases. Chiropractic
does its healing by freeing impinged nerves to excite the natural healing
within. This is one of the
reasons we witness these incredible healing miracles.
It is not by the chiropractic mechanic but the wisdom within.
In closure I remember one of my professors from Italy
who said it so well, “There is room and necessity for all healing fields
keeping in mind that the ultimate goal is for the healing of your patient.
Keep in mind young doctors, doctors of medicine are the best
first-degree first aiders at handling the effects of trauma and disease, but
only chiropractors have the ability to treat the causes.
You will be the only primary physician to address the cause of
disease and guide the conditions of post trauma.”
