Chiropractic care can seem very mysterious if you have never experienced it
before. Stress or injury can
cause vertebrae in the spinal column to misalign, leading to pain and
illness. Through realignment, a
chiropractor restores normal motion to a misaligned spine so healing can
occur.
A chiropractor or Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) has an
extensive education. Once
accepted into a graduate studies program, the student of chiropractic will
complete an equivalent five year program of studies before graduating with a
Doctorate of Chiropractic degree. A
student of chiropractic will learn about the anatomy and physiology of the
body, how the body changes in the face of disease and toxic substances and
the art, science and philosophy of chiropractic medicine.
A typical office visit to a chiropractor has a basic
structure, although it can vary from office to office.
On your first visit, a chiropractor will discuss your areas of pain
and concerns and determine how extensive the effect of the subluxation
(misalignment) is. To fully
examine a patient, x-rays may be required, as well as an ortho-neuro
examination. After fully
examining the patient, a treatment plan will be established.
The focus of each treatment plan is to restore normal function to the
subluxated areas of the spine through very specific actions using either
their hands or an instrument; this is called an “adjustment,” resulting
in restored function of your nervous system.
This determination is based on a number of factors; for
example, the extent of the condition, length of time since the onset of the
condition or injury, the age of the patient, how quickly they heal, and if
there are any complicating factors such as a previous injury to the area.
Throughout the treatment, the chiropractor will reassess how much
progress is being made and adjust the frequency of visits accordingly.
Chiropractic care is relatively inexpensive, especially when compared
to costly and painful joint replacement or back surgery.
A noise may be heard during an adjustment.
This is similar to the sound of “popping” your knuckle.
An adjustment is relatively painless, although you may experience
pain if the joint is irritated from swelling or surrounding muscle tension.
Once the adjustment is performed, your body takes over its inborn
ability to heal. As healing
occurs, your body may relapse to the same stages of dysfunction and pain
that occurred with the original injury.
During this time, you may actually feel increased discomfort, but
that will pass as your body continues to heal.
Most patients find that they feel so much better and have such an
improved quality of life with chiropractic care that they continue care on a
maintenance schedule to avoid future problems.
Maintenance care for continued well-being usually consists of a
monthly office visit.
When the interference of misaligned vertebrae causing
nerve irritation is removed by the adjustment of the subluxations, our
bodies perform better. We are
able to digest food better, rest better, and are more resistant to
environmental irritants. To see
just how much better your life and health can be, visit your local
chiropractor today.
